In our study, we will use two sophisticated clinical devices that are suitable for measuring both structural and functional changes in the retina of the eye, not only in patients with disease, but also in healthy patients, where these changes can occur, for example, as a result of aging.
The OCT Zeiss Stratus is a device that, thanks to its high resolution, allows to create tomographic images in the examined tissues of the eye. It works on the principle of light reflection. Tissues can be imaged in the range of 1-15 micrometers, i.e. better than when using conventional ultrasound methods (Šeda J., 2013). A tomographic image is composed of individual A scans. In this, linear way, we gradually create a B scan. B scans allow you to create a 3D view. An important parameter of this device is the measurement of RNFL thickness. The device creates a circular B scan with a diameter of 3.4 mm around the optical disc. After scanning the image, a quantitative and graphic analysis is performed. The scan is so-called straightened and the RNFL boundaries are found. In the retina, it is the first layer below the vitreous, which fills the entire eyeball. The measured RNFL thickness is then compared to a database of individuals of similar age, sex, and race. This analysis is one of the most important that this device offers.

Results

In our study, we did not demonstrate a statistically significant relationship between the average thickness of the retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) and the average value of retinal functional sensitivity (r = 0.18, p = 0.34) in the right eyes as well as in the left eyes of the examined subjects (r = 0.20, p = 0.29). We also did not find a statistically significant relationship secondarily between the variable called the spherical equivalent of the refractive error (SE) and the average thickness of the retina in the macula in the right eyes (r = 0.34, p = 0.06) and left eyes (r = 0.18, p = 0.32).
